Rating : - Excellent but overlooked work of art I've been a Richie Havens fan for over 30 years, and this is one of my favorites of his very extensive catalog. I found it soon after release and enjoyed the album because it seemed to mark a return to a simpler acoustic style. As with many older Richie albums, it includes several covers in which he recasts the material into his very distinctive style that often makes it more memorable than the original. My favorite song on this album is "The Hawk", written by Kris Kristofferson. Also found covers of Sting's "They Dance Alone", and Jackson Browne's "Lives in the Balance" to be very strong, along with a bluesy rework of the Youngblood's "Darkness, Darkness". These are songs that still sound fresh when I play them today.
Meanwhile, I have been waiting a very very long time for a CD release of Richie's live album, "On Stage" that gathered various live performances from 1971 & 1972. The double LP is excellent, but mine are scratched from tons of play, so I would like to have this album on CD format. Richie's official website has indicated the "On Stage" CD is "coming soon" for what seems like 1-2 years at least.
